ROLLINSFORD -- It may not have been the complete coronation that some league officials predicted, but TJ's/Navy Yard, the Dover Co-Ed Softball team that posted a 19-1 record during regular season, won its second league title in three years on Aug. 28.
Navy Yard managed to squeeze by Shirts Happen and Station House by just one run before crushing Chumley's 16-1 in five innings in the teams' first meeting of the tournament and then 15-1 in the league championship game at Goldstar Park.

TJs/NavyYard favorite to win league title
ROLLINSFORD -- TJ's/Navy Yard, which just missed having the perfect season when it lost to Chumley's 15-10 earlier this month, is by far the favorite to win the 2008 Dover Co-Ed Softball League championship this weekend.
This team simply has no equal and has been nothing short of a juggernaught all season long. With a 19-1 record, it is hard to imagine anyone beating these guys when the playoff tournament opens Saturday at Guppy Park in Dover and concludes Sunday at Goldstar Park in Rollinsford.
Some of the early morning match-ups include the league's newest team, The Beacons, coached by Bob Cook, taking on Post 47, which just defeated the Beacons, 25-11, on Wednesday. The Beacons, who finished 10th, will play Post 47, the seventh seed in the tournament.
Varney's Cleaners, which finished with a 3-17 record and took 9th place, will take on Shirts Happen, League President Ben Hazen's team, at 8 a.m. in Rollinsford. The winner of that game will take on TJs at 10:30 a.m. in Rollinsford.
Sixth place finishers P. Hussey will take on 5th place finisher Merrill's Radiator at 9:15 a.m. at Guppy Park. The winner of The Beacons and Post 47 game will take on Chumley's at 10:30 a.m., which finished second with a 17-3 record.
Station House, which finished third with a 14-5 record, will play Awarness, the fourth place team that posted a 14-6 record at 9:15 a.m. in Rollinsford.
As good as TJ's may be, some Dover Co-Ed teams believe they have as a good a chance as anyone to spoil the coronation party. Besides Chumley's, which beat TJ's, Awareness, Station House and Awareness like their chances.
But when it comes to softball playoff tournaments, anything can happen and there is no way to tell for sure which team will come out on top Sunday and capture the league trophy.
Just ask the New England Patriots, which finished 18-1. Their only loss came in the final game, the Superbowl, against the New York Giants, 17-14. No one predicted that would happen.

Team balloting to begin for first annual All-Star game
ROLLINSFORD -- The Dover Co-Ed Softball League's first annual All-Star game will feature some of the best players on the league's 11 teams playing against one another in what should be a memorable day at GoldStar Park.
League officials are asking teams to select three players, two guys and one female, player and forward their selections via e-mail to Bob Cook, manager of The Beacons, by Friday, July 18, at 6 p.m.
Cook suggests the best way for teams to select players would be by secret ballot that can be conducted by paper or e-mail. Each player should be given a list of each team's male players and female players. They will then be asked to pick two men and one woman by ballot. The team's coach will then count up the results to determine who will represent their team in the All-Star game. The exact date and time of the contest has yet to be determined and league officials may announce a date after they hold their regularly scheduled meeting on July 14 at the American Legion Hall.
Each team should forward their ballot results to Bob Cook at robert.cook26@comcast.net. and Cook will then send out a league-wide e-mail announcing the rosters for the two All-Star teams a week prior to the scheduled game.
The two All-Star teams are as follows:
Team Group A will consist of players from Station House, TJ's, Moore Construction, Shirts Happen, Post 47 and P. Hussey.
Team Group B will be made up of players from Chumley's, Merrill's Radiator, Access, Varney's Cleaners, and The Beacons.
Each should have no less than 10 men and five women, but those numbers could fluctuate depending on each team's balloting process. Access, which was slotted to be in Team Group B, has since dropped out of the league, which means Team Group B could have three less players than Team Group A.
Please call Bob Cook at 603-978-1326 if you have any questions.

First-ever All-star game in the works
ROLLINSFORD -- Dover Co-Ed League officials announced Monday plans to hold the first-ever All-star game at GoldStar Park which will give the league's 11 teams a chance to showcase their most talented players.
The idea was proposed by Beacons Manager Bob Cook and received strong support from Dover Co-Ed League President Ben Hazen who wrote Cook, "Sounds like a cool idea. "
The exact date and details are still being work out by league officials, but tentative plans call for each team to nominate three players and at least one woman player.
The team's are split into two divisions based on how they finished in the standings a year ago and each division would end up with about 15 players and at least five women. The two teams would then face-off against one another at a date to be determined.
The two Divisions are as follows:
Team Group A: Station House, TJ's, Moore Construction, Shirts Happen, Post 47 and P. Hussey
Team Group B: Chumley's, Merrill's Radiator, Access, Varney's Cleaners, and The Beacons.
League officials will make more information available to all the teams when the final details are worked out.
Cook said the All-star game would give the teams a chance to have some of their players play together. It would also represent a break in the middle of the 20-game regular season.
"Even though this is my first year in this league I already know there are some really talented players and I thought it would be great if they could play together on two teams for bragging rights," Cook said.
The Beacons manager envisions members of all the teams watching the game and having a good time. If the teams like the way it goes, Cook hopes it could become an annual tradition.

Navy Yard perfect, but just barely...
ROLLINSFORD -- Navy Yard, A.K.A. TJ's, maintained their status as the only undefeated team in the Dover Co-Ed Softball League by scoring one more run to defeat Merrill's Radiator Friday night.
The final score was 18-17, but the contest could have gone either way on what was an absolutely, picture perfect night for co-ed softball at GoldStar Park on the banks of the Salmon Falls River.
Navy Yard player Karen Tuttle proved to be the heroine who rescued her teammates with a towering triple that knocked in two runs to go with her two other hits.
The game see-sawed through six innings with both teams scoring runs, taking the lead only to see the other regain the lead. In the end, Navy Yard needed to flash some good gloves in the 7th inning to preserve a tenuous one-run lead and somehow they did to improve to 8-0 nearly halfway through the 2008 season.
But a tip of the hat definitely goes to Tom Ferland's Merrill's Radiator squad. They battled Navy Yard every pitch of the way before Navy Yard eventually triumphed in the final frame.

Welcome to the official on-line home of the Dover Co-ed Softball League
ROLLINSFORD -- Those who have played for many years in the Dover Co-Ed Softball League know just how good it is, but up until now there has not been one central place for its 11 teams and league officials to share information, standings, box scores and photos.
A new blog was born at 2:08 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, to address this need. Hopefully, teams will submit whatever information they want to post to Bob Cook, the keeper of the new league blog, so he can post it and then distribute it to our teams.
The blog can also be used to post important announcements about upcoming tournaments, changes in league policy and any other information from league president Ben Hazen.
Teams can also submit short write-ups via e-mail to Bob Cook about their games with teh final score and whatever details they want to include such as dramatic homeruns, close plays at home, or decisive plays. They can also submit any digital photos or videos that can be posted with their stories.
The beautiful things about blogs is that they can contain virtually anything. They can also provide the league with a vehicle to promote itself to businesses or other groups who might want to learn more about the league.
Please forward any information you would like to post to Bob Cook at robert.cook26@comcast.net and we can go from there.
